The present conduct of this 1936 process, the Kroll-Betterton process, is discussed with emphasis on operational improvements. With several green applications on the horizon, bismuth has become an even more important minor metal in the smelting and refining of lead. Smelters with a complex sulphide feed invariably deal with bismuth.
The results of tests to examine the Kroll-Betterton process for the removal of bismuth from lead bullion using calcium and magnesium are presented. The ratio of the masses of the two metals may be optimized to achieve minimum process cost. Losses of the metals in the process are attributed mainly to attrition during dissolution in the bullion.
Calcium and magnesium are added to a molten lead-bismuth bath, the resulting bismuth compounds have higher melting points and lower densities than the lead, and can be removed as dross. The compounds are treated with chlorine to free up the bismuth. Temperature used in the process is about 380-500°C. The other major processes for …
De-silvered lead is freed of bismuth by the Betterton–Kroll process, treating it with metallic calcium and magnesium.سرب نقرهزدایی شده با فرآیند Betterton–Kroll از بیسموت آزاد میشود و آن را با کلسیم فلزی و منیزیم تصفیه میکند.
Lead bullion containing more than 0.1 percent bismuth can be purified by the Betterton-Kroll process, which usually follows softening, desilvering, and dezincing and involves treatment of the melt with calcium and magnesium. Bismuth unites with these metals to form compounds that rise to the surface. The compounds are skimmed off and treated ...
Bismuth metal is usually separated from ores of other metals by the Betterton-Kroll process. Calcium or magnesium is added to the molten (melted) ore where it forms an alloy with bismuth. Later, the bismuth can be separated from the …

bismuth (Betterton-Kroll process). The first step, softening, removes the antimony, arsenic, and tin by air oxidation in a reverberatory furnace or by the Harris process. Next, in the Parkes process, zinc is added to the melt to remove the silver and gold. The zinc, silver, and gold form insoluble compounds which are skimmed off the melt. The ...

Lead is a chemical element with the atomic number 82 and the symbol Pb (from the Latin plumbum). It is a heavy metal that is denser than most common materials. Lead is soft and malleable, and has a relatively low melting point. When freshly cut, lead is silvery with a hint of blue; it tarnishes to a dull gray color when exposed to air. Lead has …
2. Bismuth Oxide and Related Materials: Productive Strategies. Nowadays, bismuth is mainly produced as a side product of lead streams and could be isolated through the Betterton–Kroll process [] or through an electrochemical procedure known as Betts electrolytic process [].It is obtained in a highly purified form for those applications where …

bismuth and lead. The common method for separating bismuth from lead is called Kroll-Betterton Process which uses calcium and/or magnesium to remove bismuth from lead bath. Kroll-Betterton Process consists in adding a calcium-magnesium alloy to form intermetallic compounds Ca-Mg-Bi of high melting point and lower density than lead. …
Bismuth, the most metallic element in group V A of the periodic table, is primarily a by-product of lead refining. It is also a by-product of several ore-dressing operations, especially high-grade scheelite and wolframite ores. It is generally recovered by processing lead electrorefining slimes, Kroll-Betterton dross, and other process residues which contain …

refinement of lead by the Betts or Betterton–Kroll pro-cess. The first is based on the dissolution of a lead anode in a fluorosilicic acid and its deposition on a cathode; in this case, Bi and other metals remain in the anode slime. In the second method, calcium in the form of an alloy with lead or a Ca + Mg mixture are added to

The Betterton-Kroll Process is a pyrometallurgical process for refining lead from lead bullion (lead that still contains significant amounts of impurities). Developed by William Justin Kroll in 1922, the Betterton–Kroll process is one of the final steps in conventional lead smelting. After gold, copper, and silver are removed from the lead, significant …
